Religious Education

At Harewood, Religious Education is a core subject that plays a vital role in developing pupils’ understanding of faith, belief, and the diverse world in which they live. Our RE curriculum is carefully structured around a two-year cycle to ensure full coverage and progression for all pupils, particularly in mixed-age classes. We use Understanding Christianity and the Locally Agreed Syllabus, Believing and Belonging, as the basis for our curriculum

In line with Church of England guidance, our curriculum is balanced so that approximately 50% focuses on Christianity and 50% explores a range of other worldviews and religions. This approach enables pupils to gain a deep understanding of Christian beliefs and practices while also developing respect and insight into other faiths and non-religious perspectives.

Through engaging, enquiry-based learning, pupils are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, reflect on their own ideas, and consider different viewpoints. Lessons explore key concepts such as belief, identity, community, and meaning, helping children to make connections between religious teachings and their own lives. Teachers carefully deliver Religious Education lessons to ensure that children feel that they can be themselves, without any judgement.

Our RE teaching promotes our Christian values of Hope, Honesty, Courage, Forgiveness and Community. With a strong emphasis on spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, supporting pupils to become respectful, informed, and open-minded individuals. As a Church of England school, we aim to nurture a strong sense of dignity and respect for all, underpinned by Christian values, while celebrating diversity within our wider community.

The two-year cycle ensures that pupils revisit key themes and build on prior knowledge, allowing for deeper understanding and progression over time. Careful planning ensures continuity and challenge across all year groups.
