Eco-Committee

Our Eco-Committee are a group of children and Mrs Wright who meet to plan and organise activities to make our school a greener place. This helps us all learn about the environment and help the world environment in the process.

Green Flag Eco Award

During 2021 the group helped to organise activities for families during lockdown and on the return to school. These activities and our other projects have meant that our school have been awarded our first Green Flag.

In the Summer Term of 2023, we applied for the renewal of our Green Flag and we passed with flying colours! The Eco-Schools Team were very impressed with our Eco-Committee’s work.

They said that the work we do at Harewood “Shows that young people… are aware of environmental issues and committed to being active and creating positive change. This knowledge and attitude have provided your school with excellent foundations for the many successes that you’ve achieved this year. We have loved reading about your journey and are incredibly impressed by all you have achieved. We have no hesitation in awarding you an Eco-Schools Green Flag!”

Our children, with the invaluable support of Mrs. Minshull, have made a huge, positive impact in our school.

We are working hard in school to make sure that we recycle paper, we free our playground from litter, use less electric, save water and raise awareness on how to make our school a greener place. We are very excited about our second award and we are now close to becoming an Eco-School.

Our Eco-Committee has introduced a new recycling collection in school. In collaboration with Recycle 4 Charity, we are collecting printer ink cartridges. We have a collection box in our Library. Once full, we will send it to Recycle 4 Charity. In return, while benefitting the environment, we will raise funds to support our curricular activities.

Eco Committee News

We are currently collecting used ink cartridges to be recycled.

Our Eco-Committee will be working with the Outdoor Education Officer from the Harewood Estate to look at how they are developing their eco strategies and how we might learn from their work in school.

In Autumn we started an exciting new collection of seeds for the campaign “Leeds Needs Trees”, promoted by Leeds City Council. You can collect acorns, beech nuts, sweet chestnuts and conkers and bring them to school from now till November. They’ll be collected and taken to the Arium where they’ll be sown. When the trees have grown, they’ll be planted around the city creating woodlands and new habitats for birds and plants as well as reducing the carbon footprint of the city.

Thank you all for your help!
